NHL Offseason Thread - 2017

Since shit is starting to go down, guess we'll start a thread.

Jack Eichel has fired both Tim Murray and Dan Bylsma.

I still love that some people honestly thought there was a Eichel vs. McDavid debate.

I don't think there was ever a real serious debate it was just a really good second overall pick and any other year he could easily be a one. Like Laine this year

I think recently there's actually been a trend of the 1st overall pick not being the best player from their draft.

Correct Picks
Matthews > Laine
McDavid > Eichel
Kane over JVR, etc

Debatable
Tavares over Hedman
Stamkos over Doughty
Ekblad over the field (Draisaitl, etc) - depends on Ekblad injury issues I suppose

Incorrect Picks
Hall over Seguin
Yakupov over anybody (Galchenyuk, Forsberg, Lindholm, Rielly)
RNH over Gaudreau or Kucherov
E.Johnson over Toews and Backstrom

Though a lot of these are hindsight and I suppose some of you could disagree.

Some of those (Yakupov and Erik Johnson) were heralded as absolute slam ducks at the time. But in hindsight, passing on Backstrom is a painful miss

I think I would still go Ekblad first because there's no way to know on the injuries. Doughty over Stamkos in a vacuum and Tavares over Hedman is a tossup.

Context matters. I don't think Tampa is disappointed they took Stamkos over Doughty, ditto NYI for Tavares over Hedman. They're all all-stars/elite talents. Had Toronto taken Laine, they'd STILL be a good team.

Also note that Edmonton had 3 of those incorrect picks, before lucking into McDavid...something even they couldn't fuck up

Leafs don't make the playoffs with Laine instead of Matthews imo.

Speaking of Laine and Matthews, they've both been nominated for the Calder along with Werenski. Says so much about this years rookie class that Marner and Nylander can get 60 points and never really be in the conversation.

Hypothetical:

Are the Lightning better off with Doughty and Tavares that instead of Stamkos and Hedman?

No.

But I fully believe Hedman is the best player mentioned.

Give how well they draft forwards, they're better off with Doughty/Hedman IMO.

Also I'm dumb. I forgot Karlsson was in the Stamkos year. I'd take him 1st overall tbh.

Speaking of...some more award finalists..

Norris: Hedman, Burns, Karlsson
Vezina: Price, Bobrosvky and Holtby

Karlsson and Bobrovsky are my picks. I'd also prefer to see Talbot there instead of Price.

Kovy apparently wants to return to the NHL. His options include:

a) sign with the Devils
b) sign/trade the Devils or the Devils trade his rights
c) sign with any of the other 29 teams but every single team has to vote and approve it ahead of time

i think B is most likely.

You're not gonna like the answer.

But it likely involves trading Marner or Nylander. Or we throw cash at Alzner and hope a top 4 of Zaitsev, Alzner, Rielly and Gardiner gets it done.

Leafs just need to roll with their core and use all their many assets throwing darts at defensemen, hoping one hits. There are some bandaids in free-agency that would help. Michael Del Zotto isn't the healthiest guy, but he fits the up-tempo pace that the Leafs like.

Leafs need somebody to slow it down though. Rielly and Gardiner are our top 2 defenders and both are offensive or two way guys...Leafs just need a legit stud shut down guy.

Who was the last guy Babcock had in that role? Even his shutdown guys like Kronwall had offensive juice.

I'm not against there being some offensive punch but the Leafs DO need somebody a bit more physical in their top 4.

Rielly - Zaitsev
Gardiner - ??? (Alzner?)
Carrick - ???

I dunno. Lots of offseason to go.

I think it's safe to say that Trevor Linden is not a fan of the new draft lottery system.

Flyers winning the lottery relatively fair TBH.
Although I'm still not over losing the lottery to Chicago and thus having to pick JVR over Patrick Kane.

I do feel bad for Colorado. They can't even tank right.
